Over the years, I have been brought into the landscape of stones, both physically and spiritually. I have followed the trails through the plains, mountains and desserts, and have seen that time weathered the surface of stones. I imagine what kind of life these stones have led. This journey had begun even without my knowledge.
It is this essence of time, contained inside the stones, that I am trying to capture in my work. I want my work to contain certain imaginative space and ambiguity.
I was born in Tokyo, Japan, but started to study ceramics once I settled in Britain. The greater part of my work is thrown on the wheel, and then I alter the form. 'Weathered' surfaces are achieved by multiple layers of glazes and successive high temperature firings, with sandblasting technique. I moved to Cornwall from London in 2003.
